{LANtastic NOS 4.0 released; faster, supports Windows}
Artisoft has released LANtastic 4.0, the latest version of its network
operating system, which provides improved support for Microsoft Windows
3.0, faster performance, and other new features, including UPS support the
and ability to unload from memory without rebooting.
{"The new version has increased performance. Many of the feature
{enhancements were requested from our end users,"} said Jack Schoof,
Artisoft's President and CEO. {"As LANtastic networks grow in size and
{number, we'll continue adding functionality that meets the demands of
{growing businesses."}
LANtastic 4.0 NOS and LANcache [(included)] support Microsoft
Windows 3.0 in real, standard, and enhanced modes on both servers and
workstations. The INSTALL program has been refined to provide simple
installation for a variety of system configurations. The INSTALL program
has also incorporated several new advanced utilities.
Users can now unload the network operating system from memory
with a command, and execute remote batch command on the server from
their workstations. Uninterruptible power supply (UPS) support has been
added, along with the capability to shut down the server from the
workstation and to notify users of shutdown.
The LANtastic 4.0 upgrade is available to all registered users direct
from Artisoft. For users of LANtastic 2 Mbps and Artisoft AE-2 Ethernet
adapters, the upgrade costs $50 and handles networks from one to 300
users.
{LANtastic for Windows software completes the connection.
The final link between LANtastic 4.0 and the Windows graphic
environment is Artisoft's separate utility, LANtastic for Windows.
These Windows-oriented versions of LANtastic NET and NET_MGR
provide the pull-down menus and icons that appear in Windows Program
Manager.
LANtastic for Windows will retail for $299 per network.
